YOUTH AND CULTURAL COORDINATION ASSISTANT
2 Term Positions: 1st position will end one year from start date
2nd position will end April 30, 2021
This position will be responsible for assisting with the coordination of the community-based youth program for youth living in the communities of Peerless Lake and Trout Lake ages 9 -18. The cultural aspect of the position will include assistance with coordination of events for culture within the community. These events may include community gatherings for all ages. (i.e. Treaty Days, Winter Carnival, etc.)
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assisting with activities by age groups and in some cases gender. These age groups may include ages 9-12. 13-18. (Youth Sports, Cooking Classes, Girls Sessions, Boys Sessions);
- Collecting contact details and emergency contact details from the youth participants and their guardians and keeping this information in a secure locked cabinet as per the Freedom of Information and Protection policy;
- Ensuring that participants understand attendance rules and what will be tolerated (Bullying, Substance Abuse, Disrespectful Behaviour, etc.);
- Assisting with out of town sports tournaments when required and assisting with fundraising when required;
- Assisting with finding transportation when required for youth to attend;
- Ensuring program evaluation forms are collected after each activity;
- Ensuring supplies are signed in and out where applicable and an inventory of supplies is kept in an excel spreadsheet or data base;
- Providing a community youth letter update for the benefit of guardians and parents on a quarterly basis. The letter will be made available to the membership;
- Working with the school gymnasium and other office space providers to gain an understanding the rental space requirement. (rental agreements, damage deposit, etc.);
- Ensuring that refreshments and snacks are in stock for each activity and that they comply with the COVID- 19 restrictions on food sharing;
- Setting up a community Youth Council who will have the opportunity to speak with Chief and Council about ideas for the youth in the community;
- Assist with developing and maintaining a resource list of contractors for workshops and for cultural workshops;
- Other duties as required and assigned by the supervisor.
Please note additional duties not listed pertaining to membership may be required from time to time. Training may also be required to build capacity and knowledge on any changes that may come forward pertaining to membership. Travel may be required for training purposes.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Minimum high school diploma with previous program management experience;
- Computer skills (MS Office, Word, Outlook, Power Point & Excel);
- Previous experience working with youth;
- Understanding of Indigenous cultural practices;
- Excellent planning and organizational skills;
- Friendly and out-going in social contacts;
- Works easily with others;
- Enjoys co-ordinating events and dealing with people;
- Driver’s Licence – Class 05;
- Must sign an Oath of Confidentiality prior to commencing employment;
- Ability to understand/speak Cree an asset;
- Must provide an RCMP Police Information Check.
